From the Archives: In early 2018, Blazent published a framework for enterprise data health. Nearly a decade later, we look back at those original principles to see how they hold up in the era of hybrid-cloud architecture and autonomous IT.

In 2018, we published five foundational data management resolutions for enterprise IT teams. Back then, the primary challenge was taming static, on-premises Configuration Management Databases (CMDBs).

Today, those foundational rules have not changed, but the technology required to execute them has shifted dramatically. In 2026, you cannot rely on human engineers to manually enforce data hygiene. Let’s revisit our original five data management resolutions to see how they apply to the modern, automated enterprise.

1. Build Muscle in Your Core (Data)

  • The 2018 Resolution: Every organization must establish a core set of master and operational data to give analysts a stable structure for decision-making.
  • The 2026 Reality: Eight years ago, a strong data core enabled better human reporting. Today, your core data is the strict prerequisite for Artificial Intelligence and automation. If your CMDB baseline is corrupted, your AIOps engines will hallucinate, and your automated CI/CD pipelines will push destructive changes to your infrastructure. Tuning your core data now means utilizing automated intelligence to establish an infallible “golden record.”

2. Clear the Clutter (and the Cloud Sprawl)

  • The 2018 Resolution: Stop treating your CMDB like a thrift shop. Purge obsolete, redundant, and conflicting data.
  • The 2026 Reality: We warned about data clutter before the explosion of ephemeral containers, serverless functions, and decentralized SaaS applications. Clutter today is not just annoying; it is incredibly expensive. Millions of orphaned cloud workloads and “zombie” servers actively drain FinOps budgets. Clearing the clutter now requires an automated lifecycle management engine that instantly flags retired assets and deprecated microservices.

3. Seek New Relationships (and Dependencies)

  • The 2018 Resolution: Meaningful data relationships provide the keys to valuable organizational insights about how people, processes, and technology interact.
  • The 2026 Reality: In 2018, this meant manually mapping basic server-to-application connections. Today, mapping relationships means enforcing Zero-Trust architecture. Your data must instantly correlate an end-user’s Entra ID profile to their Intune-managed laptop, and map that device’s access to external cloud storage. If these complex hybrid relationships are not mapped, your security perimeter simply doesn’t exist.

4. Take Strict Ownership of Your Data

  • The 2018 Resolution: Assign accountability for data content, quality, and use to a responsible data owner.
  • The 2026 Reality: Ownership is no longer just a manager’s title scribbled on a whiteboard it is enforced programmatically. If a new AWS EC2 instance is spun up without a required FinOps ownership tag and an assigned ITSM support group, an automated governance gateway must immediately reject or quarantine the asset.

5. Focus on the Value (Stop Hoarding)

  • The 2018 Resolution: Know the difference between an investor and a hoarder. Measure the business insights you can harvest, not the volume of data you possess.
  • The 2026 Reality: In the modern threat landscape, data hoarding is an active liability. Storing massive volumes of unverified, unutilized telemetry creates a massive target for ransomware threat actors and drives up cloud storage costs. Modern enterprises do not dump raw discovery data directly into their ITSM platforms; they route it through an intelligent gateway that purifies and discards useless telemetry before it enters the system of record.

Automating Your Data Management Resolutions

The strategic goals of 2018 are still the absolute truth in 2026. The only difference is velocity. You can no longer achieve these resolutions using spreadsheets and manual labor.

Make this the year you finally automate your data quality. By utilizing Blazent’s Data Intelligence platform, you can continuously ingest, reconcile, and validate your hybrid-cloud telemetry ensuring your enterprise is perfectly positioned for the next decade of IT innovation.
