From the Archives: In May 2016, Blazent partnered with 451 Research to poll 200 C-level IT leaders on the state of Machine Learning and Predictive Analytics. A decade later, we look back at those findings to see how that early warning shaped the modern AI era.
Ten years ago, the enterprise IT landscape was obsessed with a new, cutting-edge concept: machine learning. To understand how organizations were adapting, Blazent commissioned a massive industry study with 451 Research.
The findings revealed a massive, industry-wide paradox regarding enterprise AI readiness.
While 67% of respondents had a strong appetite for deploying advanced analytics, more than 60% admitted they had absolutely no confidence in their organization’s underlying data quality.
Our warning to the industry in 2016 was simple: Given IT’s reliance on telemetry to perform these initiatives, until data quality processes are properly managed, businesses will suffer the severe limitations of “garbage in, garbage out.”
The 2016 Warning vs. The 2026 Reality
A decade ago, nearly 40% of enterprises were still relying on rudimentary, manual data cleansing spreadsheets to prepare for machine learning. Looking back at the primary contributors to data failure in our 2016 study, it is alarming how many organizations still suffer from these exact same blind spots today:
- The Integration Blind Spot: In 2016, over 50% of IT leaders were unsure if all their data sources had been successfully integrated before cleansing. Today, with the explosion of ephemeral multi-cloud architecture and edge IoT devices, that integration gap has widened into a massive Zero-Trust security threat.
- The Reactive Trap: Nearly 45% of 2016 organizations were in a reactive mode, relying on post-incident reports to find data errors. In 2026, you cannot operate reactively. If your CMDB is corrupted, your AIOps routing engines will instantly trigger cascading, automated failures.
- The “Hope for the Best” Strategy: Astonishingly, 10% of organizations in the study avoided data quality management completely, opting to just “hope for the best.”
Achieving True Enterprise AI Readiness
In 2016, “garbage in, garbage out” meant a predictive analytics dashboard might display a slightly inaccurate forecast. Today, the stakes are exponentially higher.
Advanced analytic technologies are no longer “cutting edge”; they actively run the modern enterprise. Feeding unreconciled, fragmented telemetry into an AIOps engine or a Generative AI platform does not just result in a bad report; it results in severe AI hallucinations, automated outages, and massive FinOps waste.
The promise of autonomous IT will remain unfulfilled until organizations remedy their foundational data quality issues. True enterprise AI readiness requires shifting data refinement to the very front of the supply chain.
Blazent’s Data Intelligence platform is the strict prerequisite for modern automation. By automatically ingesting, normalizing, and reconciling multi-source telemetry at the API gateway, Blazent eliminates the “garbage in” problem entirely. We ensure your Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is an infallible, real-time source of truth providing the exact foundation required to confidently execute your AI strategy.
